If you look at a map of Ontario you will see a large island
(well, almost an island!) south of the Trenton / Belleville area. This is Prince
Edward County, a cyclist's delight. It is relatively flat, and is
littered with quiet paved roads. This is unquestionably the preferred way to
cycle from Brighton to Kingston.

Leave Presqu'ile Provincial Park by riding
east on the Presqu'ile Parkway. |
| 1 km |
Turn right on Ontario Street (the sign was
missing, however, in June 2006) and almost immediately turn left on
Harbour Street. You should now find yourself riding east alongside Lake
Ontario. |
| 2 km |
Harbour Street Parkette.
 |
| 3 km |
Harbour Street ends at County Road 64 (Prince
Edward Street) where you turn right to continue your easterly trek. C.R.64
has an excellent paved shoulder for the next 6 km. |
| 9 km |
Murray Canal is part of the Trent-Severn Waterway system. This is
where you will leave the Waterfront Trail which follows a gravel road
immediately to the north of the canal, and eventually ends at Trenton.
Instead, continue along County Road #64 for a further 5 km. Unfortunately,
there is no longer a paved shoulder. |
| 14 km |
You will reach a stop sign where there are signs directing
you left to Carrying Place and County Road #33. Do not turn left, but go
straight ahead on Gardenville Road (signed to Gardenville). |
| 17 km |
At the stop sign, turn left on
Smokes Pt. Road (unmarked in 2005!) for
600 m to reach County Road #33. |
| 18 km |
When you reach the stop sign you are at County Road #33, the historic Loyalist
Parkway, 3 km south of Carrying Place. Turn right here!
County
Road #33 can be quite
busy, especially on summer weekends, but it was a decent paved shoulder. |

Consecon turnoff. You may wish to turn right and ride through Consecon, an interesting
village with a store and a pub! This short
detour adds very little, if any, distance as you will follow the original
route of C.R.33. If you are ready to camp for the night,
there is an excellent private site 1 km south of Consecon on Prince Edward
County Road #39 (Bayview Park; 613-392-9753). The alternative is simply
to continue along C.R.33. |
| 27 km |
North Beach Road (County Road #27). North Beach Provincial Park (day use
only - no camping) is 2 km down this road. |
| 31 km |
Hamlet of Hillier. |
| 32 km |
1 km south of Hillier be sure to turn left on Danforth
Road. This is a quiet paved road, and a pleasant change from
County Road #33. Besides, it is shorter to Wellington this way! |
| 38 km |
Danforth Road ends at the T-junction. Turn right on
to Consecon Street. |
| 40 km |
Town of Wellington,
an attractive little town with several B&Bs.
When you reach the stop sign in the village of Wellington, turn left and
you will be back on County Road #33.The stretch of the road from
Wellington to Bloomfield has a good paved shoulder for cycling. |
