Cheticamp to Baddeck

This section is one of delightful contrasts. After cycling for 25 km through Acadian fishing villages, you follow the Cabot Trail inland through the beautiful Marguaree River valley before heading over Hunter's Mountain and into Baddeck.

0 km Naturally, you leave Chéticamp by following the Cabot Trail in a southerly direction. The 25 km ride between Chéticamp and Marguaree Harbour is very pleasant, and not too difficult. The Cabot Trail remains close to the coast as it winds through a series of Acadian fishing villages. You are in predominantly French speaking country, and you should spot a few red, white and blue Acadian flags flying in the wind.
10 km Community of Grand Étang.
14 km Community of St. Joseph du Moine
17 km Community of Cap Lemoine, home to one of Nova Scotia's most unusual tourist attractions, the Scarecrow Theatre, an outdoor display of over 100 scarecrows dressed and masked to represent politicians, actors and other famous personalities.
20 km Community of Terre Noire.
22 km Community of Belle Côte.
24 km Margaree Harbour is a colourful coastal village that wraps around a harbour filled with fishing boats and guarded by two lighthouses, presenting majestic views north and south along the rugged Cape Breton coastline. Once you cross the bridge you will come to Route 219, the Ceilidh Trail. Continue, however, along the Cabot Trail. For the next 23 km, you will enjoy pleasant, easy cycling through the fertile Margaree River valley. The communities along the Margaree River were established early in the nineteenth century by pioneers from England and later by settlers from Ireland and Scotland.
36 km Community of Margaree Forks.
40 km Community of North East Margaree. Here, the Margaree Salmon Museum presents the history of salmon fishing on the Margaree River.
43 km Community of Emerald
47 km Community of Lake O'Law. Here, you leave behind the Margaree Valley and the going becomes a little tougher.
53 km Lake O'Law Provincial Picnic Park. WB01061_.GIF (476 bytes) NA00087A.gif (2177 bytes)
65 km Community of Middle River. The Middle River area has been productive farmland and woodlot since the first Scottish pioneers settled here in 1812.
71 km Start climbing! You are now about to commence the 2 km ascent of Hunter's Mountain.
73 km Summit of Hunter's Mountain. Hunter's Mountain is at the centre of a vast network of snowmobile and cross-country ski trails that make the region one of Nova Scotia's most popular winter playgrounds.
79 km Trans Canada Highway (Route 105). Turn left and follow this busy highway for the next 8 km. Fortunately, the TCH has an excellent wide paved shoulder for cycling.
87 km Exit from the Trans Canada Highway at Exit #8, and follow Route 205 into Baddeck.
89 km Baddeck village centre. In a beautiful setting on the shores of the sparkling Bras d'Or Lakes, Baddeck is both picturesque and interesting. The diversity of accommodations, restaurants and activities make it one of Canada's finest resort communities.
